I was driving near Arch, N.M., at dusk one summer day and noticed that a farmer was burning the wheat stubble in one of his fields. When I saw some horses in a neighboring pasture, I set up this shot on my tripod. I received a second-place award from the New Mexico Press Association, which was kind of a big deal to me at the time. I was 22 and just developing a love for photography. (1984)
I featured this little girl and her family in a photojournalism assignment in college. The subject of my photo spread was undocumented workers and their life in the U.S. I promised to never reveal the family members' names or whereabouts and they graciously agreed to let me get some pictures. While working for the Portales News-Tribune, we were always looking for local feature photos (the paper did not subscribe to wire service photos). After an ice storm, I was driving down an alley looking up at the icicles hanging off the roof of a house when I came across this. Someone had left their old hat by the back door, creating an unusual scene. (1984)
The late Officer Sherman Toler at a vehicle wreck near Portales, N.M. Sherman was a wonderful person and great to work with, being very patient with a young reporter/photographer. Sadly, he was murdered a few years later after pulling over an ex-convict near Tucumcari. The driver of this car miraculously survived and wasn't even injured. The high-line pole creased the roof of the car, behind the driver's seat. (1984)
