I love the contrast of a cotton field in black and white. Two of my beautiful children -- Hannah and Noah -- posed for me. (2004)
I shot this picture of actor Richard Farnsworth at the conclusion of the so-called "Last Cattle Drive of the Millennium," which ended in Lincoln, N.M., where Farnsworth lived at the time. I had met him a few years earlier in Ruidoso. Very nice, down-to-earth man. (1999)
I was driving near Arch, N.M., at dusk one summer day and noticed that a farmer was burning the wheat stubble in one of his fields. When I saw some horses in a neighboring pasture, I set up this shot on my tripod. I received a second-place award from the New Mexico Press Association, which was kind of a big deal to me at the time. I was 22 and just developing a love for photography. (1984)
I featured this little girl and her family in a photojournalism assignment in college. The subject of my photo spread was undocumented workers and their life in the U.S. I promised to never reveal the family members' names or whereabouts and they graciously agreed to let me get some pictures. (1987)
The future President Obama visited the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum a couple of weeks before the Democratic Primary in 2008. He held a forum on veteran's issues in our courtyard. (2008)
While working for the Portales News-Tribune, we were always looking for local feature photos (the paper did not subscribe to wire service photos). After an ice storm, I was driving down an alley looking up at the icicles hanging off the roof of a house when I came across this. Someone had left their old hat by the back door, creating an unusual scene. (1984)
One of my favorite pictures. Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett had left this exhibition game with a slight concussion and was hanging out on the sidelines with his helmet on backward. When he saw me focusing on him, he stopped so I could get a picture. (1984)
Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, adds yardage during a game against the Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. (1992)
Former ENMU coach Bill Kelly congratulates backup quarterback Steve Kragthorpe after a touchdown pass (1984). My editor loved the coach's enthusiasm in this picture.
The late Officer Sherman Toler at a vehicle wreck near Portales, N.M. Sherman was a wonderful person and great to work with, being very patient with a young reporter/photographer. Sadly, he was murdered a few years later after pulling over an ex-convict near Tucumcari. The driver of this car miraculously survived and wasn't even injured. The high-line pole creased the roof of the car, behind the driver's seat. (1984)

My friend and co-worker Carrie with a Holstein calf at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. (2001)
